Actually, yes. A couple of five years ago ;) there was a bad snowstorm here, and afterwards, the people on the TV news suggested going to buy seeds for the birds who might starve without what vegetation and seeds were under about a foot and a half or so of snow. So I bought a few seed bells and such and scattered them around the yard for the birds, and one day I saw a magnificent red bird eating the seeds in the yard. I inquired about it from a bird-lover I work with, and she told me it was a purple finch. "Red is purple?" I asked. "Yes." she told me. And I said, "Okay......." ;)

I did see a shiny purple bird, but that was some other species. My brain, she broke that day...

Interesting story, the males are really beautiful!
Actually I don't know why they call them "purple" finch, in many books about birds, they say that their color is strawberry, which makes sense don't you think?
